When I painted this, I had our first floor in mind, either in the hall, the dining room or in the powder room that we were in the midst of renovating. Blues and browns are "our colors", and much of the first floor is themed in those tones. The canvas conforms to the "golden ratio" of 1.618 which is derived from the Fibonacci sequence. I used 11 distinct browns and 12 separate blues in the piece, with a lot of transparent paints and metallic paints thrown in. I also combined circular lines with straight lines, drawing on lessons learned from past paintings to "put it all together". I chose the name "Rhapsody in Blues, and Browns" as a play on George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue". We'll see if Sarah likes it enough for it to get hung on the wall!
