My wife Sarah and I "scoped out" the room assigned to me at the Louden House for the 2024 "Prismatic" exhibition. In it was a central pedestal, and this got me thinking about possibly doing a three dimensional piece to contribute to the exhibition. Since the exhibition is all about the visible color spectrum I adorned it in rainbow colors, with a little bling thrown in. I found an MDF wooden cube on-line, and decided I'd try that as a foundation. After considering many patterning options, I decided on breaking the cube down into "color cubes" - one per vertex. I added the black lines and silver/white highlights after it was done. The biggest challenges of the piece are (1) how should it be displayed - flat side down (and if so which one) or - what I think would look better - vertex side down (but then how do I design a base for that? there aren't any out there I can find to buy), and (2) where should I sign the piece? I usually sign my paintings on the frame in the back, so as not to deter from the geometric symmetry of the painting. In any case, I had fun doing my first 3-d painting on a cube!
