While I was working on this painting, our region was hit by a windstorm that knocked out power to half the city. I kept on painting, but had to limit myself to daylight hours and to areas of the house that got good natural light. My wife and I gravitate to blues and browns in our house, so this piece felt very "at home" to me. While we had no power, we had to readjust our routine a lot, and it made me take stock of how thankful I was to have a home that could withstand a severe storm. My daughter said "it reminds me of a compass" when she saw the finished piece, so between that comment and the focus on "home", I decided to call it "Navigating Home".
