I made this painting to donate to an auction to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common pediatric cancer, and I have several patients with ALL. When the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) representative asked me about supporting their cause, I told her I would paint a picture in honor of LLS. The colors of LLS are black, white gray and red, and I after thinking a while on what I could do with those colors, I decided to make a piece that incorporated their color palette and also represent recent advances in precision medicine such as the tyrosine kinase inhibitor drugs that have proved so successful in leukemias driven by the BCR-ABL translocation. So I wanted to end up with a high-tech, almost target-like piece based on blacks, grays, whites and red. The finished painting looks nothing like their logo (which is their name and a drop of blood), but I think it came out looking good.
