I was asked by some medical students at the University of Kentucky to participate in a Medical Humanities event to discuss how the arts can enrich physicians' lives. I decided to talk about how my discovery of painting coincided with a tragic professional event that almost ended my career and how, at least for me, art was therapeutic and an important part of mental health balance. I had never documented my "process" before, so as part of my presentation to them, I started "Caliente" from scratch and took many photos of the evolution of the painting as it progressed. I called it "Caliente" because I used fluorescent acrylics for the first time, and the effect was to "heat it up!" I donated this painting to the University of Kentucky HealthCare System for use in an underfunded clinic in need of art.
