When I laid down the geometric grid for this painting, I wanted to evoke motion on the canvas, so I made the pattern in a swirl-like design, using browns, golds, reds, oranges, bronzes and yellows. The interesting aspect of this painting is that it was one of three that I entered into an employee art competition in 2022 but then forgot that I entered it because months had passed since I had done so and heard back from the selection committee. Turns out this was the one they wanted (above “Caliente” and “Kaleidoscope”), and in the meantime I had gifted “Swirl” to Sarah’s wonderful cousin Dave and his awesome new wife Caroline for their wedding. The art selection committee was generous and understanding, however, and allowed me to enter “Kaleidoscope” instead for the employee art call.
