Sun Flower

24 in x 24 in,

12/24

I used two geometric compasses - one large and one small - to lay down the grid for this painting. I decided to use only circular lines for the main grid, by drawing circles from a few different axis points - one at the center point of the painting, and then others half way between center and the four corners. The shape immediately reminded me of a daisy-like flower with cascading petals, and I decided to do the piece in yellows and golds. There are 24 different yellows/golds in the painting, and I reserved the metallic hues for insets of the shapes in between the "petals". The palette goes from lighter yellows in the center to darker ones (almost bordering orange) toward the periphery.
