I painted this piece for my mother-in-law "Marty" who liked "Thinking of Malachite" when she visited our house. Though she had some challenges settling on a color scheme, I went with blues because "Blue" is what she instinctively told me first when I asked her what color she wanted it to be. It has the same grid as "Thinking of Malachite" but looks quite different because of how I filled in the grid with color. It is made up of dozens of blues and neutral colors. What is very interesting to me about it is that it serves as a kind of study about how patterning and shading and color choice can make two paintings with an identical grid look quite different. In the end, she loved it, and it’s hanging in her living room in a prominent place, which I consider a high complement.
