Faberge Noel

13 in x 21 in,

12/25

I painted this piece to go into our home’s Christmas holiday rotation on the kitchen wall. There is a small space between the kitchen and the family room where a 13 in x 21 in canvas fits perfectly in, and we’ve come to rotate out paintings there every first day of the month. Sarah (my wife) takes the lead on this, and she picks out paintings that go with the season or holiday that month contains. My goal for this painting was to make a complex grid that combined arcs and straight lines in a geometric pattern, and then to fill it in with greens, reds and golds. When I looked at the grid, I kind of saw a central “flower” kind of shape that I thought could reference a poinsettia, so I made that in many shades of red to blend in with a sea of greens, reds and golds in the background. I added a border of micro glass beads to give textural interest. The finished painting reminded me, for some reason, of a Faberge egg, so I called the painting “Faberge Noel”.
