The premise of this piece was a symmetric geometric pattern made up of relatively large shapes painted with various shades of neutral colors reflecting the various tones of human skin complexions. I decided to then put central inserts in many of the shapes and lighten the darks with a little titanium white or darken the lights with a little mars black within each. So each inset is actually the color of the larger shape, but with either a little black or white mixed in to alter the hue.
