Achromatic Criss Cross

My goal for this painting was to combine shades of whites, grays, silvers and blacks into a geometric pattern consisting of symmetrical shapes laid down with rulers (for the straight lines) and compasses (for the circular shapes). The use of an “achromatic” grayscale palette is intended for viewers to focus on shape, texture and tonal shifts rather than the interplay of colors. I laid down subtle gradations of black, white, and many shades of grey, and involved some metallic paints (that have mica flakes in them to give sheen), guiding the eye along sharp diagonals and circular arcs. The finished piece is intended to balance simplicity and complexity. The finished piece reflects the tension between order and entropy.
