I had been exploring painting on circular canvases, and decided to create a piece inspired by human skin complexions. The grid was laid down with 3 different sized geometric compasses, so none of the primary shapes in the piece have a straight line. Dozens of browns and neutrals were used to fill in the grid, and I decided to put in insets in the form of lines and shapes for visual interest. When I showed it to my daughter, she said "it looks like a shield", so that's how it got its name.
