Echo: Green to Blue

The grid for this painting consists of a repetitive pattern of vertical lines coupled with an offset pattern of horizontal lines laid down with a cadence of every fourth block, and finally with circles that extend to the horizontal and vertical edges of the piece along with one that is half the distance from center to the first circle.  Then I chose to lay down colors according to the circles, going from green in the middle out to teals then to light/medium blues and finally to indigos/dark blues, as if following the natural color wheel.  To me, the painting sets up a strong tension between strict verticality and expansive curvature. The field of slim vertical strips establishes a steady, almost metronomic rhythm—like data bars, rainfall, or sound waves frozen in time.  Against this linear grid, the concentric circular bands and central disc feel like a wavefront propagating through and beyond the canvas.  The inner green circle suggests biological vitality, with cooler cyans and blues taking over moving outward.  Variation in textures such as matte against satin, smooth against patterned segments and the use of metallics that shimmer are included to provide interest and slow the eye down to invite close reading of individual “units”.  I was thinking of a ripple in water when I was developing this painting.   The oscillation between components invites reflection, as new relationships and dimensions are revealed when the viewer spends some time with the piece.
